UX Engineering

Emirates Aviation University (EAU), part of the Emirates Group, is an aviation institution in the Middle East. As a Lead UX Designer and Engineer, I played a hybrid role in the complete redesign and development of the Emirates Grading Platform, an e-learning and assessment system for the crew of Emirates and its partner airlines.

As a UX Design Lead, my objective was to create a new cloud platform from the ground up, replacing legacy systems to solve the challenges of remote training. I focused on translating the complex needs of trainers and a globally distributed crew into an effective digital solution.

The challenge

The key challenge was to move beyond traditional training methods to support a global crew with dynamic travel rosters. This required a flexible solution that could manage complex assessment logic tailored to each trainee's history and course requirements, while remaining reliable and usable for both technical trainers and a diverse group of crew members.

My role

As a Lead UX Designer and Engineer, I was involved in the entire product development lifecycle, from concept to code.

I worked closely with EAU trainers and stakeholders to define user needs, map existing workflows, and identify the critical requirements for a remote-first training and grading platform.

I developed the user experience from concept to detailed design, creating wireframes, user flows, and interactive prototypes to test solutions, particularly for the complex form-building and grading processes.

A major focus was the grading system's core feature: a form builder. I designed this framework to let trainers construct complex assessment forms using a drag-and-drop interface with pre-configured widgets and customisable logic, catering to assessments tailored to each pilot's training history.

I collaborated closely with the development team on the technical architecture, designing the approach for server-side PDF generation to handle performance demands and ensuring the UI, built on Angular and Node.js, was optimised for a data-intensive platform.

Outcomes

The new Emirates Grading Platform modernised EAU's training and assessment capabilities. Trainers and crew can now manage training and grading entirely remotely, a significant improvement for users spread across different time zones and schedules.

The form builder and automated rule engine dramatically reduced the time and effort required for creating, managing, and processing personalised assessments.

The final product is a more efficient platform for both the trainers designing assessments and the crew undertaking them.

The project delivered a cloud platform that is now the foundation for EAU's digital training operations.
